Rita  continues to enjoy retirement and seems to find enough projects to keep herself busy.  She is also very active in our church and volunteers her time on many fronts.  She continues helping with the PADS homeless program and as a Literacy volunteer.  Her current "learner" is 70+ year old Lebanese woman who has only been in the US for three years and wants to learn English.  She also has an active social calendar with bridge groups, church groups, retired teacher activities and more.

Michelle and Wayne are living in Marshalltown, IA and busy with work.   They are working on several remodeling projects and enjoying their hot tub.  Michelle enjoys her appointment as the head of her department at work.  It is more responsibility, a pay raise and opportunities to travel (annual trip to Washington, DC) and a chance to expand her leadership skills. Michelle made a presentation at a National Conference held in Chicago in Oct (2005) so she stayed with us for a few days.  Michelle is very active with the Jaycees and Wayne works with the police department as a reserve.  Wayne is spending time on home projects and clearing the bush off their 4 acre home.  He has returned to Ames to work at a former job doing electric motor repairs and commutes about 90 minutes per day.

Mary (2003 student teacher picture)  is living in Carmel, IN and she is teaching in Indianapolis.  She has taught third and fifth grades and was in a Title 1 classroom and had additional responsibilities for testing students from that program.  During the summer of 2005 she taught kindergarten.  For the fall of 2007-08 she is at  Arlington Woods Elem #99, still in INDY, and will be teaching third grade full time.  She has a dog, a carin terrier, named Murphy and he is very cute.  She worked full time at Best Buy during the summer 2007 as customer service manager but is back to part-time for the fall.

Mike (my 2003 yearbook picture)  continues to enjoy retirement and finds time to work out at the gym, play chess, stargaze with the Naperville Astronomical Association and ride bikes.  See the month-by-month account of our adventures.

[Jan]  Some sad news - we had to put our Siberian Husky, Sterling, to sleep.  He was a great dog for over ten years but his back and hips gave out.  We will miss him.  We took a short 2 day trip to Northern Indiana (Shipshewana) to visit the Mennonite and Amish communities - educational as well as good food and shopping.  Took a quick trip (five days) to Daytona, Florida to share a condo with relatives.  Of course there was a "cold wave" while we were there and a Man-of-War jellyfish alert, but it was still fun to get out of Chicago in January.

[Feb] I turned 58 this month...where did all those years go??  Up in a cloud of HCl + NH3.   Worked at several chess tournaments and was recognized at the State Team Chess tourney for my 30+ years as a coach and officer in the state coaches organization.  I am also tutoring several students in chemistry in the evenings.  I subbed at South for a week in Physics-that was fun but I like being retired better than working.

[Mar] A very busy month for us.  We took a Hawaiian cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line.  The cruise stopped at several islands for day excursions and then cruised at night.  SO MUCH FUN.  Aloha!!!  We also took another trip to South Carolina to talk to contractors about starting our home.  My mother went along this trip.  We stopped at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.  What a fantastic place to visit....a definite "must see".

[April] Attended the District 99 retirement dinner and saw another 30+ of my "old" friends join me in retirement bliss.  Mary turned 25.  Saw "The Color Purple" in Chicago - VERY GOOD.  I started swim lessons - if I am going to live on a lake maybe I should learn to swim before I turn 60!!!

[May] Michelle turned 30 and we went to Iowa for her birthday party (after midnight and a couple of rounds of shots I realized I AM NOT 30 ANYMORE...these "kids" of mine are starting to make me feel "elderly".  Attended an ice skating show at United Center (7th row seats, center ice-SWEET) and a special showing of "Sound of Music" at the Tivoli in DG with JULIE ANDREWS herself (now 70 years old) as the guest speaker.  I had some varicose vein surgery on my left leg - turned out fine - feel and look great.  Sailing season started again with two very cold May days but it was nice to be on the lake again.

[June]  Spent a week at Daytona Beach, FL at a very nice condo with the kids and had a great time.  I got to see the shuttle Atlantis launch...SO WONDERFUL...I have always wanted to go into space.  My wife said she will send my ashes up....I don't think that is the same!!!!!!!  Spent most of the month trying to get the DG home ready to sell and looking at house plans for the new home in SC and deciding on a contractor.  We went sailing 3 times, attended a family reunion in Indiana and I had my other leg worked on for my veins....glad that is all done now.

[July]  No picnic....I miss them and seeing all you guys.  If you are in DG you can let me know and I will be happy for you to buy me lunch, ice cream and now that you are all over 21 (some of you are over 31/41/even 51!!! OMG are you old)...or a beer!!!!   We took a short 5 day trip to South Carolina to meet with our builder and move our house plans along.  We spent time at our clubhouse (in the pool) and in the lake.

[Aug]  Doing lots of work on our house to get ready to put it on the market for sale.  We are not in any hurry to sell since our SC home won't be ready to late spring but I would like to have only one mortgage.  I can make a good deal to alum!!!!  It is officially listed now - August 27.  Go to www.bairdwarner.com and then type in my address 5927 Ridgewood Cir and you will find it.  Celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary this month and attended a wedding in Indiana (kids of friends).  Spent sometime visiting with relatives and had Mary and Michelle join us for a mini-family reunion.  I bought a new bike, GIANT Cypress DX.  It is a hybrid bike for street and trails.  I also joined the Downers Grove Bike Club and have gone on a couple of rides.  It was a hectic and difficult month getting our house ready to sell.

[Sept]  School started and I didn't....YIPEEEEE.  I love retirement.  What a busy month!  We had two open houses with 8 potential buyers walking through our house...no bids.  Rita took a trip to Tunica, Mississippi with her sister to gamble.  The plan was to win enough $$$ to pay for our new house.  Now she is working at Wal-mart as a greeter to pay off the gambling debt.  JUST KIDDING!!!!  We spent a week in Virginia (Williamsburg/Jamestown) and Virginia Beach.  Very interesting and FUN.  I realized how little I know about American History...guess I spent too much time in the lab in my youth.  We followed up the week in Virginia with 5 days in South Carolina talking with our builder and banker to get the new home started....MONEY MONEY MONEY....and the process of moving begins.

[Oct]  A normal month with both of us helping at the PADS shelter, tutoring, going to the gym, bike trips, playing bridge and a few meetings.  We took another 5 day trip to SC to close on our construction/house mortgage and decide on EVERYTHING in the inside of the house (paint, carpet, floor stain, cabinets, doors, windows, hardware, light fixtures, counter tops, appliances....EVERYTHING)  We made all the decisions from 8am on Wed till 5 pm on Thurs and we didn't kill each other.  I hope that in 6 months when it is all done we still like the choices!!!!!  Oct 31 - Halloween - we had 160 kids come to our door begging for candy....less than the 350 kids a couple of years earlier!!!  10/31 also marked the 65th day our house has been on the market with no bids....bummer.

[Nov]  I hate having to keep my house SO CLEAN all the time in case someone calls to see it!!!!  Construction in SC has started and I am on my way to being a land baron with two mortgages!!!!  HAPPY THANKSGIVING to everyone.  We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with both kids home, my mother visiting and a group of relatives from Indiana spending time with us too.  Ate TOO MUCH, ate TOO MUCH again and again....leftovers are better than the first time!!!!!  Hope y'all had a chance to eat TOO MUCH and to spend time being thankful.

[Dec]  Some people ask why we are moving to South Carolina....NO SNOW, NO ICE, it was 82 F on Dec 10th when we visited and 17 F in DG when we returned and I had to cut my car out of an ice block at the O'hare airport parking lot....do I need to continue???  This month I helped with a couple of chess tournaments, subbed at DGS, tutored several students, took a trip to SC to see the house under construction, spent time with family and friends for the holidays.  I was a good boy and hoping Santa will bring me lots of fun toys.  Wishing good health and happiness for all of you and your families.  The NN2008 edition will be available soon.....HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!  READ OUR CHRISTMAS LETTER.  18 weeks of having my house on the market....no bids!!!! Sorry, Jason Hulst ('88) did bid $1....do I hear $2?
