chemistry icon Some Family News:

Rita  continues to enjoy retirement and seems to find enough projects to keep herself busy.  She is also very active in our church and volunteers her time on many fronts.  She continues helping with the PADS homeless program and as a Literacy volunteer.  Her latest student is a young Hispanic woman.  She also has an active social calendar with bridge groups, church groups, retired teacher activities and more.

Michelle and Wayne are living in Marshalltown, IA and busy with work.   They are working on several remodeling projects and enjoying their hot tub.  Michelle enjoys her appointment as the head of her department at work.  It is more responsibility, a pay raise and opportunities to travel (annual trip to Washington, DC) and expand her leadership skills. Michelle made a presentation at a National Conference held in Chicago in Oct (2005) so she stayed with us for a few days.  Wayne is spending time on home projects and clearing the bush off their 4 acre home.  He is also working part-time at a greenhouse/nursery in Marshalltown.

Mary (2003 student teacher picture)  is living in Carmel, IN and she will be teaching in Indianapolis for the third year.  She has taught third and fifth grades and was in a Title 1 classroom and had additional responsibilities for testing students from that program.  During the summer of 2005 she taught kindergarten.  For the fall of 2006-07 she is moving to a new school, still in INDY, and will be teaching third grade full time.  She has a dog, a carin terrier, named Murphy.  He is very cute but does not get along with our Husky....actually our Husky is afraid of the little guy.  She worked full time at Best Buy during the summer 2006 as customer service manager but is back to part-time for the fall.

I (my 2003 yearbook picture)  [July] spent the 4th holiday weekend in Indiana going to Rita's 40th year HS reunion and with family.  Bought a new 50" wide screen DLP HDTV after giving our 20 year old set to Michelle and Wayne. Took a short trip to Galena and also continued our sailing on Lake Michigan (took Tasso Kaper '81 and his wife one evening). Meet Kristin Mitchell '01 and Jon Stancel '98 for ice cream and conversation.  I had just a wee bit of Alumni Picnic withdrawal on that Saturday but survived.  It was nice to hear from so many of you during that month.

[Aug] Attended an Alan Jackson concert (country singer), went sailing with Emil Martinec '76 and his wife, spent two days in Arkansas reviewing retirement properties, spent 4 days at a condo with Michelle and Wayne in the Lake of the Ozarks (very nice) and finished that week with a family reunion in Indiana (about 60 members for Rita's family).  I was a presenter for a mentor program at Lyons Township HS and Jon Schaefer '98 was one of the new math teachers.  Finished up the month with a 6 day visit to NYC (our first visit to the BIG APPLE).  We saw the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Times Square, WTC, the UN, the TODAY show and studios, bridges, the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" show-were in the audience and passed the test to be a contestant!!! but did not get selected to be on the show, tall buildings, a Broadway play, the subway, lots of traffic and our hotel.  The entire trip was fun but NYC will not be our retirement choice.  Also visited with Kristina Wilson ('97) and Roy Goodman ('80) while there.

[Sept] I can't believe school has started again without me.  I will be working as a Mentor again for Golden Apple helping new teachers in the Chicago Public Schools.  I have six interns this year and am looking forward to another challenging experience.  On Sept. 8th we had a Japanese teacher arrive at our house for a seven week stay.  Her name is Saori and she stayed with us as she took English classes at Dominican University in Oak Park/River Forest.  She taught us some Japanese and how to eat with chopsticks.

[Oct]  We had a great time with Saori...showing her all the tourist points of Chicago and getting exposed to the Japanese culture.  Her parents flew over from Japan for a weekend visit!!!!  What a treat having them here.  She was so excited about everything in the US, especially the food, the White Sox and the shopping.  We took Saori to see the Wisconsin Dells and all the fall colors.  It was a bit cool and raining but she still had a good time.  Saori returned to Japan on Oct 28th and invited us to come visit and stay with her.  We intend to take advantage of that opportunity within the next 18 months.  Happy Mole Day - As you know I almost forgot it this year.  Happy Halloween!!! We had over 250 kids at our house...so much candy!!!

[Nov] A relaxing month - played cards with friends, I continued working with my intern teachers in Chicago (they are all doing great), had a new oven installed, enjoyed Thanksgiving with family, did some chemistry tutoring and helped run a chess tourney.

[Dec] Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and whatever other greeting fits your situation.  We are downplaying the gift giving this year and plan on giving more money to the funds supporting Katrina and other disaster victims.  We are planning on spending Christmas at home with Mary and then a couple days with Michelle and Wayne in Iowa.  We did get to see the play "Wicked" in Chicago (very good production) and afterwards drove the streets of Chicago in a snowstorm looking at the holiday lights.  I also had an angiogram in mid December due to some chest pains.  The results came back ALL CLEAR...no problem with my heart at all and I had a clear stress test in July.  So I think the "old retired guy" was just stressed about Santa coming.  Mary was in DG on Christmas eve and we all traveled to Iowa to spend Christmas day with Michelle and Wayne.   It was a wonderful visit and we are all thankful for a healthy year - 2005.

[Jan 2006]  Continued mentoring, helping with chess tourneys and playing bridge.  The big event was a week long sailboat charter to the British Virgin Islands (BVI).  We chartered a 40' sailboat and went with 29 sailors from our summer timeshare group.  Altogether there were 9 boats in our group.  Michelle and Wayne went with us.  Although the weather was a bit rough a couple of days (winds 25-40 and seas 8 feet) we had a GREAT time.

[Feb]  Attended the sailboat show in Chicago and picked out our "dream yacht" - of course we couldn't afford it!!!  I helped with 3 chess tourneys, including the IHSA state tourney.  The DGS team had a good tourney and it was fun to watch them and not be their coach.  I lost some money on the Super Bowl and had another birthday - 57 this year....almost a mole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Mar] This was an uneventful month other than my mentoring.

[Apr]  I concluded my mentoring activities and all my interns were successful this year and plan on returning to teaching next fall.  Mary came home for spring break - always good to have her home.  We attended the retirement dinner for my friends leaving teaching this year.  It is always a great party and so nice to see old friends and so many smiling faces.  At the end of the month we started a 10 day vacation (I know--everyday is vacation when you are retired) to Arizona.  It was a great trip.  See TOO MANY pictures by clicking here.

[May]  We saw "Spamalot", a spoof play in the theme of Monty Python, in Chicago - it was so funny.  Our bridge season concluded and our sailing season began.  We took another vacation (7days), this time to South Carolina and Georgia.  It was actually more of a search for the perfect retirement site since we are planning on moving.  We want someplace warmer and on a lake so we can have our own boat.  We didn't find the "perfect site" but some contenders.

[June] We had some friends from Oregon visit us and we learned a few things about genealogy and civil war soldiers.  I had my GATE interns to our house for a picnic and end of school year party.  They were a great group of teachers.  Finally at the end of the month we spent two weeks in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  We rented a house for 9 days and a houseboat for 4 days.  Family members joined us for most of the time.  It was great fun but we have ruled out Arkansas as a retirement home.  See pics of our Arkansas trip by clicking HERE.

[July] Went to Dar-Lon Cheng's ('93 alum) wedding (very nice).  Spent several days sailing on lake Michigan.  We had our house stained....in retirement you really can sit and watch paint dry!!!..Especially when someone else is doing the painting!!!!  We entertained friends from my wife's HS class of 1965 for a weekend and had a great time.  Heidi Applegate ('85) stopped in town and had lunch with us and showed pictures of her trips to Peru and Alaska.  But the BIG NEWS is that the search for the perfect retirement site is over!!!!  There is no perfect site, but we have found one that is pretty close to perfect.  On July 26th we bought a lot in South Carolina near Columbia and on Lake Murray.  It is in a gated community about 4 years old (not a "retirement-55+ community") with lots of nice houses, a community center, pool, exercise room, tennis courts and a 50,000 acre lake in our front yard.  We will have our OWN boat slip about a 5 minute walk from our front door where we will park our new sailboat.  Of course a few things have to happen first.  We have to build a house there, sell a house here, buy a boat and move.  That process will take a year or more to transpire.  We are happy to have found such a nice place and are excited about the change in our lives but I am also sad to be leaving DG and my life for the past 34 years....too many friends and fond memories here.  To see the latest pictures of our new homesite click here.

[August] Joined the TALL SHIPS as they came to Chicago.  The day was rainy and miserable but the tall ships are so awesome.  Spent a few days with my mom in Indiana and traveled to Missouri to see my dad.  I have been more involved with chess activities this month and trying to get back in shape to play in tournaments.   We celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary by attending a Dixie Chicks concert in Chicago.  They put on a great show.

[September] We spent a few days sailing.  Visited friends in Galena for a long weekend.  Our Japanese friend, Saori, made a return visit to stay with us for a week and our kids came home for a weekend to see her.  Michelle and Wayne came to Chicago for a conference and spent a few days with us.  I spent most of the month rebuilding my deck and it looks great and is VERY STRONG now.  At the end of the month my extended family all met at Grand Bear Lodge in Utica, IL to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday.  It was a great weekend and I went on my very first water slide...what a rush.  I will admit I enjoyed the "lazy river" much better!!!!  I also started tutoring some new chem students and worked at DGS as a sub for three days.

[October] What a month!!!!  Some of you might remember Mr. Mortensen from DGS.  He is now teaching at a charter school, ACT, in Chicago and recently received a Fulbright trip to Japan.  He asked me to sub for him for three weeks while he was gone.  I said yes in a weak moment....giving up retirement to WORK again...what was I thinking.  From 10/2-10/20 I taught physics and a general science course to juniors and seniors at an inner city school.  The experience and challenge was wonderful.  It was SO DIFFERENT from teaching AP Chem at DGS.  The kids were great and responded well to my teaching style.  We had fun and learned some science too.  The days were long and the work demanding for me but I felt really good when I finished.  TODAY is MOLE DAY as I write this update and an email will be going out to you soon.

[November]  Spent 6 days visiting South Carolina and talking to builders about our new home in Lexington, SC.  So many decisions to make....it will be a slow process.  I had a nice lunch with Rob Plotke ('79) and caught up on all his travels.  Spent T'giving with family in IN eating WAY TOO MUCH.

[December]  My favorite month...still a kid at heart and can't wait for SANTA to come visit my house.  Already have the "mole cookies" baked (they never get stale) and my list is ready and I have been a VERY GOOD boy!!!!
