The 2004 party (pictures) had 93 alumni attendees (plus 39 spouses/friends/kids) so a grand total of 132 attendees. The "old timers award" went to Ted Stelling from the class of 1974!!!!. The softball game didn't happen due to some little T-ball kids playing on the field. Many chem alum wanted to just go over there and throw them off the field, but cooler heads (the lawyers in the group) prevailed. Also so many arrived and we were having such a great time talking that we just didn't need to play. It was a great time and so nice to see all the alumni who took the time to attend. A special recognition to some of the "really old alum" from the 70's - Ted Stelling '74, Cyndi (Brown) Cuppernell '75; Emil Martinec '76, Steve Carnes '76, Joe Bularzik '78, Pam (Marrs) Simon '78, Bob Hayden '79 and Rob Plotke '79.
The food was excellent and thanks for everyone for bringing appetizers or desserts. I think after about two weeks we finally finished all the left over beef and chicken. As those attending know, there was a "little" problem with my deck. The collapse, only about 15 cm, was more of a shock than a real hazard. Apparently the bolts holding it to the house had rusted/pulled out of the wall and side brace gave way. Fortunately no one was hurt and the iced tea was quickly replaced. The deck is being repaired (not replaced) and will be as good as new very soon.
Some Family News:
Rita continues to enjoy retirement and seems to find enough projects to keep herself busy. She spends much of her time learning how to work with digital pictures and surfing the internet to find the perfect lakefront home for our retirement. She is also very active in our church and volunteers her time on many fronts. She spent every Tues morning this year helping with the PADS homeless program. In the fall she was trained as a Literacy volunteer and is currently meeting weekly with two woman who are new the US and need to learn English. She also has an active social calendar with bridge groups, church groups, retired teacher activities and more.
Michelle and Wayne are living in Marshalltown, IA and busy with work. They have added a new hot tub to their house so they can relax after all the remodeling projects they are working on in their "new" house. Michelle has just be appointed the head of her department at work. Her previous boss resigned and Michelle was selected from a pool of candidates. It will mean more responsibility, a pay raise and opportunities to travel and expand her leadership skills. She is very excited about the new position. Wayne recently quit his job and is going back to school to study law enforcement with the goal of becoming a police officer. They spent 10 days in May in Washington, DC on a work related trip.
Mary (2003 student teacher picture) is living in Carmel, IN and she has a teaching job in Indianapolis. It is a third grade position and she is in a Title 1 classroom and has additional responsibilities for testing students from that program. She is excited about working and having students to work with. She is in a co-taught classroom and has been assigned a mentor so that she has ample support to make her first year a success. She has a new dog, a carin terrier, named Murphy. He is very cute but does not get along with our Husky....actually our Husky is afraid of the little guy. In May she is starting a part-time job at Best Buy in the cell-phone department. This is a perfect job for her since she has spent the last 7 years doing nothing but talking on one. Also she has had every service provider and most of the models of cell phones at one point or another. The job will provide pizza and gas money and keep her off the street during the summer. She will be returning to the same school in the fall.
I (my 2003 yearbook picture) am really enjoying the summer so far and retirement will not truly hit me till September. [July] When all my friends go back to "school" and I go to Vermont and New Hampshire to see the trees change colors, then I will know what retirement is really like. If any of you have tips about traveling to the Northeastern states in the fall, please send them to me. The family spent a week in St. Maartens. The week was WONDERFUL. [Aug] What happened to August? There is just not enough time when you are retired. We went sailing 5 times, we spent 7 days in North and South Carolina exploring retirement sites (found some nice places and are still considering them), I had a wisdom tooth extracted, I did some consulting work for mentoring and technology (made some $$$) and I reflected on NOT starting back to school. It was hard for a couple of days but I got over the fact that WORK was no longer part of my life. [Sept] I started a part-time job working for Golden Apple Foundation/Northwestern mentoring 9 new teachers in the Chicago Public Schools. To say the least it has been a challenge for me adjusting to the commute to the city after living in the shadow of DGS all these years. Also the CPS system is very different from suburban schools and that has been interesting. My nine interns have all had other careers and have decided to give teaching a try. They are working hard and have so much to learn. We finished our sailing season and didn't drown or wreck the boat...it was a good year. At the end of the month we took 12 days and toured New England to see all the fall colors. We joined the happy throngs of "Leaf Lookers" driving through the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Canada. It was a great trip. Stopped at the Bay of Fundy (40 foot tide changes), took a whale watching cruise and saw several whales very close up, ate fresh lobster on the coast of Maine and took lots and lots of pictures. [Oct] Continued my mentoring work and began to wonder what I had gotten into. I realized just how lucky I had been in my career to have great facilities and wonderful students (yes, that would be you!!!!). The challenges in the CPS system are at times overwhelming. Rita and I volunteered to work at the PADS homeless shelter in our church this month....another experience that makes you realize how lucky you are to have a home, a job, family that cares and a warm bed at night. At the end of the month we moved Mary to her new apartment in IN. She is not totally out of our house but it is getting closer. Soon she will be paying her own way and I will have some extra $$$$. A sad note: Rita's father died in his nursing home in Indiana. He had struggled for years with a number of illnesses and is now released from his pain. [Nov] Still mentoring. Took a short trip to Branson, MO with Rita's brother and his wife. Saw several shows, ate too much and enjoyed the time with family. On Thanksgiving day Rita and I participated in the 5K walk/run to raise money for the Bonfield foundation. There were almost 1500 people who participated on a cold and snowy Thanksgiving morning. It was a wonderful tribute to a great teacher. During the afternoon we helped serve meals to the needy and homeless at our church. Over 200 meals were served. Both our girls were home for Thanksgiving. [Dec] I helped out at a couple of chess tournaments, started tutoring a neighborhood boy in chemistry (just can't get away from those moles) and bought a new (used) car - 2004 Dodge Intrepid. My 1994 LeBaron fell apart finally. I attended the science department Christmas party as a retired guest....there were so many "young" faces there and they all had babies...made me feel pretty old. Spent several days with family in Indiana and spent Christmas weekend in Iowa with Michelle and Wayne. Santa was good to me - MP3 player, gameboy advanced, Star Trek DVD (season one) and some new clothes. Overall 2004 was a very good year for the Mayfields. [Jan] We spent the month at home fighting the flu and the snow. Rita starting tutoring two women in a literacy program. I continued mentoring the teachers in Chicago. Spent one weekend in Galena eagle watching. [Feb] Attended the boat show in Chicago looking for our "dream yacht"...of course we can only afford the dream and not the yacht!!! Took another eagle watching trip to the Mississippi (see pics) and saw several eagles and a couple of eagle nests. I went to the State Chess tourney as a worker and not as "Coach" for the first time in 32 years. It was still exciting but much less stress. DGS did a nice job without me and placed 36th. [Mar] Still mentoring. We went to a conference in Savannah, GA (pics) on working with African-American youth (related to my mentoring position) and had time to visit the city and then extended the trip to include a few days at Hilton Head, SC (pics). The area was very pretty and historic. At the end of the month we took a week and went to Las Vegas (pics) with our daughter Mary. She wanted to go somewhere for spring break as long as Dad paid. It was a nice trip and we didn't lose too much $$$ to the slots. [Apr] Still mentoring. We will be hosting a Japanese student, Saori, in the fall and she visited us for 3 days. She is very nice and wanted to eat pizza, watch basketball and see Lake Michigan. It will be fun having her here and learning more about Japan. Took a 5 day trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama (pics) to look at timeshare property and see the beach. There is still much destruction evident from the hurricanes last November. Probably not someplace I would want to live full time. [May] My mentoring job is finishing with the end of school so I will be looking for projects around the house to keep me busy. Sailing starts this month and we are looking forward to those times. Several DGS teachers/administrators retired this year-some of you might remember some of them: Dan Cozzo, Jim Geocaris, Diane Hires, Elaine Jordan, Robert Ulicny and Barb Zielinski. We took a week to visit Oregon with Rita's sister and her husband. We stayed at Depoe Bay and spent every day touring and seeing the sights. It is so beautiful out there. It was a great trip. (pics) [June] This marks the ONE YEAR anniversary of being retired. Not much of a "molestone" yet but it is a start. It was a challenging (mentoring) and exciting (vacations) year. This month includes sailing, seeing Lion King on stage, going to a cubs game, having my kids home for Father's day, and going to Hertitage Fest in DG. Also had to get a new air conditioner....there went one vacation!!!
