As a reminder, mark your calendars for the following date -- July 10, 2004 (my retirement year). It is undecided at this point if this will be the LAST picnic or not. If we are still in DG in 2005 there will be a party, but we don't know....so just in case, you might want to plan to attend this one.
The 2003 party had 45 alumni attendees (plus 15 spouses/friends/kids) with the "old timers awards" going to Steve Carnes and Emil Martinec from the class of 1976. The softball game was well played with the "old folks" winning in five innings by a score of 12-9. By "old folks" I mean everyone in the classes of 1973-2002!!!! It was a large turnout for the class of 2003 and a small turnout for everyone else so to balance the team numbers the split was between 2002 and 2003. So for the 2004 picnic let's get some more "old folks" there. It was a great time and so nice to see all the alumni who took the time to attend. A special recognition to some of the really old alum from the 70's - Emil Martinec '76, Steve Carnes '76, Keith Rose '78, Dan Malauskas '78 and John Bowman '78 (Dan had not been to a picnic since 1982 and John's last picnic was 1988). Scott Bush '82 also showed up after a 20 year break from attendance. Then these guys come up to me and say "Hi Mike, do you know who I am?????". So I was zero for three at guessing. Next year I will review all the old yearbooks before the picnic...so please, look like your graduation picture!!!....Thanks.
Some Family News:
Rita retired JUNE 6, 2003!!! She has endless summer vacations now. She has been reading, working in the yard, taking short trips and has signed up for a class at COD. Retirement continues to be very satisfying and several projects have been started at home. She has a new computer and digital camera and is beginning to enjoy having the time to explore some new technology. Her latest adventure is "scrapbooking"...what a black hole for time and money. She enjoys it and the finished products are well worth the efforts. Now that I am also retired, she is planning our trips for the fall. NE coast is first in September, followed by Arizona in October and then ???
Michelle and Wayne are living in Ames, IA and busy with work. They just bought a different house in Marshalltown (closer to work for Michelle). It is an older house with lots of room and 4 acres of wooded property with a ravine, a stream and their very own deer. It will require some new carpet and paint but they will enjoy the extra storage space and bigger living space. They visited us in DG in November and we went to IKEA shopping and they bought new dining room furniture. What a store!!!!
Mary (2003 student teacher picture) is a GRADUATE from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. After all the years in school she made the Dean's Honor roll for her last two years and has a certificate to prove it. She is looking for an elem ed position in central Indiana. She wants to stay near Muncie for a couple of more years to be near her friends. If you have any leads for her, let me know. She is working as an art director in a summer camp for Muncie schools.
I (my 2003 yearbook picture) [Sept] am teaching one section of AP Chem and two sections of AP Physics this year. I also continue my work with the new teachers (Mentor Program) and serve as a technology consultant for the teachers. [Sept] - This month went so fast....I can't believe it. My students are really great this year which I appreciate so much...especially my last time. That whole "last time" is proving a difficult challenge for me. Some things I am happy about (the last time to set up all the labs for the rotation) but other last times make me sad. So I have been on a small emotional roller coaster day by day. Overall I am excited about retirement especially as I see how much freedom and time my wife has, but I truly enjoy teaching and will miss the interaction with the kids and other staff. More on that later...[Oct] - Chess season started and the team looks pretty good. Several new freshman and my returning players have all improved. The school is trying a new grading program and I am helping teachers learn how to use it - that is proving to be a significant amount of my day. Mole day was a huge success!!! I am glad to say that I made it for 32 years without blowing up any kids on mole day!!! My students made some moles for extra credit - see the pictures. A very sad note: On October 25th, 2003 James Bonfield died after a two year battle with cancer. He started teaching with me in 1972 and served as a health teacher, dean and coach for several sports. He truly was role-model for me and spent his entire career always looking for ways to help kids. He had a positive attitude toward everything and loved life to the max. He will be missed by his family, the DGS community and all the students who had their lives enriched by knowing him. [Nov] First quarter is done for the last time. I bought a "Senior T-shirt" to wear that last week of school. Also bought a Class 2004 ring...actually a retirement ring. It has 1972-2004, a chess logo, an atom, "Mustangs" and a blue stone. It is small and tasteful and something I can wear in public and not be too noticeable. The chess team took 15th at a National tourney this month...they are getting better each week. Planning a simple Thanksgiving dinner at home with my wife, Mary and my mother. We have much to be thankful for and appreciate all our friends and family. [Dec] I can't believe it is Christmas. December was a blur of activity filled with happy people and too much food. My weight watchers diet turned into a "waist watchers growth curve". I will have to move into the gym for the rest of the month. We are enjoying Christmas at home with the girls and then a short trip to IN to visit with extended family. Hoping to just relax over break and get caught up on house projects. Happy Holidays to all of you. [Jan] Happy New Year!!!! It is final exam time, end of semester and the beginning of my final semester...senioritis!!!! They published the list of retirees for the district and I am on it. I am excited about the party and being able to celebrate a wonderful career at DGS. [Feb] This was an exciting month. The chess team finished it's season and my 32nd chess season by attending the State Team Tourney (finished 33rd out of 118 teams) and two players won individual awards. I attended a computer conference in Lansing, MI; got new glasses; hurt my knee; and turned 55 years old. That day was a mixed emotional day...happy because it is the "magic" number to let me retire early and sad because now I am definitely "old". [Mar] As my hurt knee (cause unknown) got worse I had some x-rays and my first MRI - finally after teaching units on radiation and electricity and magnetism, I get to actually see the technology in action. The results said I had some torn cartilage and needed arthroscopic surgery. So on March 10 I had some surgery...however, they found out I also had chondromalasia (bad cartilage in the kneecap area). So they did a procedure called "microfracture" in hopes of regeneration of the damaged/missing cartilage...bottom line...crutches for six weeks with NO weight (F=ma=mg=0) on my left knee. This is not the way I had hoped to spend spring break and my final quarter teaching. I feel much better and it is an inconvenience, but I am grateful it was not worse. Spent several days during spring break exploring some retirement sites in Arkansas and Kentucky. Still nothing definite but a lake in Arkansas holds some promise. [April] Wow, my teaching career...the years have gone by so quickly and now my final year is becoming my final days....in some ways I am not ready for it to be over but I am also excited about some new beginnings. Gave up my wheelchair and crutches for a cane at the end of April. A few weeks of physical therapy and I will be great by "graduation". I had a wonderful time at the District Retirement party. Over 30 retirees, 420 staff members, my family and friends spent the evening looking back over many years...it was so much fun. [May] The AP tests are over, my kid Mary graduated from Ball State on May 8th, spring is everywhere, AP Chem is finished with the qual scheme and AP Physics had "Fun with Rockets". What a month. [June] The day, June 4th, came and went like all the other hectic end of years. However, as I stood in "my room" one last time it felt strange. So many memories: 32 great years, all the "kids" who sat in the desks, the "mole" of times I balanced equations on the board, the lab tables and the countless experiments performed on them, the periodic table/graphics on the walls - painted by students, the faint smell of HCl and smoke that lingers always and the stuffed moles all around the room. It was a great career at DGS and I will always remember it with no regrets. And now retirement has started...I took my first retirement nap on Friday evening (2 hrs), went sailing on Saturday morning, another nap on Sat afternoon, went to a Cougars baseball game on Sunday and Monday...did NOTHING. I love retirement. Continue to sail often and we took a trip to Arkansas to explore lakes near Greer's Ferry and Branson. It was fun, even in the rain.
See you all July 10th!!!!

ALUMNI PICNIC
JULY 10, 2004
Party Details
A few changes this year:
2:30-4:30 = Softball, volleyball and conversation at Hillcrest School.
4:30-5:30 = Conversation and appetizers at the house.
5:30 = Let's eat!!!! The meal will be catered this year and we will provide all drinks.
6:30 - ???? = desserts and conversation.
I am asking those with last names beginning A-L to bring an appetizer and those with last names beginning M-Z to bring a dessert. This way there will be food available before and after the catering portion. If you have a special ethnic dish that you want to bring and share in addition, that is OK too.
Also some of you might be tempted to buy me a retirement gift but I have all the moles I need and we are trying to "downsize" our stuff so I would ask that if you want to do anything along those lines to please make a donation to PADS. It is charity organization that provides homeless people a place to sleep in local churches during the winter. I have worked with this organization for many years and consider it a very worthwhile donation. The link for their website is http://www.dupagepads.org and all the information about the program and how to make a donation is available. (Note: This is strictly optional and not a plea for gifts or money.)
Also many of you have sent short "memories" about your time at DGS or in my class. If you have something to share please email that to me and I am posting them (without your names) at Alumni Memories. I reserve the right to edit your comments.
I hope MANY of you can attend this year.
