As a reminder, mark your calendars for the following dates -- July 5, 2003 and July 10, 2004 (my retirement year). If you notice it is always the first Saturday after July 4th. So now you know when to come for the next mole of (or at least two) years.
The 2002 party had 45 alumni attendees with the "old timers awards" going to Steve Carnes (again) from the class of 1976. The softball game was civil with a tad bit of horseplay on both sides. The game was called at the end of 4 innings with the score tied (11-11)! It was a great time and so nice to see all the alumni who took the time to attend. Thanks.
Some Family News:
Rita retired JUNE 6, 2003. She had a very good year and some of the best kids ever. She worked with the Math team and has some talented kids this year. She is starting to line up travel ideas and plans to "just sleep" for a week or two to get caught up on the past 34 years!!! Rita celebrated her 55th birthday in October...official early retirement age for teachers....a mixed day for her. No one likes getting older (well not at this age) but it does mark a new phase of her life....one that has many opportunities. She had a retirement party, at a karaoke bar, with about 70 friends and family. She had a great time thanks to all those in attendance. You can see many smiling faces at www.molesrus.com/rita . No sound clips...you had to be there and needed a little C2H5OH to really appreciate the happy voices. She is VERY excited about not having to grade papers ever again.
Michelle and Wayne have been working on their house...added air conditioning, a new furnace, new windows and doors and a new paint job. They also have been working on the landscape in the yard as well as gutters....the joy of home ownership. It is looking really good and reflects all their hard work. Michelle spends her spare time working at her church helping with the Sunday School program and helped paint some murals on the classroom walls for the kids. Wayne continues to learn more about fireworks production and helps with setting up various displays during the summer months. Michelle spent a week in Chicago receiving training for her job and spent the week staying with us. It was fun to have her here and for Rita's retirement party. Michelle also helped her city get a multimillion dollar grant for lead paint testing in low-income housing.
Mary finished her junior year at Ball State University in Indiana. She is an elementary education major with a minor in technology. She is moving to a house off campus for 2003-04 with 5 of her friends. During the fall '02 she was in a special teaching program working in Indianapolis at an elementary school and the professors came to the school every day for seminars. It was very exciting and the only down side will be she has to drive to Indy every day. She was in a second grade class and had a very rewarding experience. She worked with about 25 Title 1 (all had special learning needs) students who were mostly African-American and from economically disadvantaged homes. I know Mary learned so much about more about "real teaching" from her supervising teacher, the students, and your 21 other colleagues in the program than she would have in classes on campus. Everyone said she did a wonderful job and her 3.92 GPA for the semester (her best ever in her school history!!!) backs that up. Mary is staying on campus during this summer to work. In the fall '03 she will be doing student teaching in Muncie in the 4th grade.
I (my
current yearbook picture) taught two sections of AP Chem and one section of AP
Physics this year. I also
continued my work with the new teachers (Mentor Program) and served as a
technology consultant for the teachers. Now a monthly update [ July '02]-- we spent a week in
Panama City, FL during mid-July....it was hot and humid but the beaches were
great and the time away to relax was good. We drove to FL and stopped at
Space Camp on the way. They wouldn't let me play with the rockets but I
did get some good pictures. Chicago has been very hot and DRY this
month. We joined a gym/wellness center in DG..."no pain/no
gain"....well, I must be gaining a lot!!!!. [Aug '02] -- We
finished up our sailing schedule with some great days. I spent several
days working with the new teachers in my role as Mentor Program
co-coordinator. We attended the family reunion for my wife's
family...always lots of good food and time to see all the family once a
year. School started for my 30th year. [Sept '02] -- Well the big
news was the Strike. The union and the administration just couldn't get
along and the teachers were forced to "walk the line" for four
days. My PE teacher friends said we walked about 20 miles each day (that
was more than a round trip to the lakefront)....glad I joined that gym!!!.
For the most part it was a "friendly" strike and really helped to bond
the teachers together. There is still so "differences" between
the two sides and the sense of "being an educational family" has been
lost in the district. We had to make up three of the days (we don't get a
few Monday holidays off) and were docked one day's pay. I thought I could
make it through my career without this experience...but no. [Oct '02] --
Chess season starts - a good team this year. Check out the new website for
chess at www.csd99.k12.il.us/south/chess
. I volunteered to work at the homeless center on Monday nights
11pm-3am...that really makes me appreciate all that we have. We had 4
members of a German brass choir spend 4 days with us as part of church related
music tour. Since we speak NO German we were glad that they spoke
English. It was fun and we are invited to Germany after we retire to stay
at their homes. Of course the Mole Day celebration was a hit at school and
no mishaps this year...always a good thing just before retirement. [Nov
'02] -- Helped present at two mentor training sessions, took a two day class on
peer coaching techniques, attended the National Merit Dinner as a guest of
Karmen Wong, entertained the Lindahls for a weekend at our house, joined a
duplicate bridge group and finished first quarter. Had a great
Thanksgiving with family in Indiana and then had my mom stay a few days with us
in DG. Both daughters were home too. [Dec '02] -- Spent six days in
Boston at an education conference and had a great ti
me.
Actually talked 8 alumni living in the Boston area into having dinner one
night. The alumni stretched over 3 decades but they all shared the DGS
Chemistry experience....we had wonderful seafood dinner with lots of
conversation. Click here for more details.
Attended a Lee Greenwood concert (an old country singer). Celebrated
Christmas day with friends and then to Indiana to visit relatives from both
sides at the end of the month. A very nice holiday break reflecting on the
importance of friends, family and good health. [Jan '03] -- A busy month at
school with finals and many chess meets...mostly just work. Took part in
the "Twenty Year Club" lunch which
honors long term experienced teachers. I am now tied for 9th
"oldest" DGS staff member. What an honor!!! [Feb '03] -- The big
news was my birthday (54 this year) even though I still feel much younger.
The chess team won the WSC conference title again. Rita and I attended a
Vince Gill concert at the House of Blues in Chicago..it was very good but I am
too old to stand and watch for several hours. [March '03] -- The big news is the
DGS Boys Basketball team going to State. They had a great post-season
ending up in the Elite Eight and losing by only 2 points. Rita and I went to North Carolina during spring break both for a vacation and looking for
retirement relocation options. The beach was beautiful but a little
cool. The area has much to offer but at this point it is just not right
for us. Too far from friends and family and a little too
"country" for us city folks. The search continues for the
perfect retirement site. [April '03] -- The district retirement dinner is in
April. Many long time staff members are on the retirement list. They
are: Rick Button, Harriet Dygert, Karla Gustie, Bill Hector, Nancy Holt, Elaine
Kies, Terry McCombs, Ray Schuda, Sandra Wojcik, and the principal, Dr. Craig
Zeck. Just think....my name will be there next year. I know many of
you had some of these teachers and I also know that they would appreciate an
email from you in their final weeks. [May '03] -- what a busy month...Rita's
retirement party and her ending a 34 year career, AP testing, final exams, many
of my long-time friends retiring, several friends and family visiting us, summer
coming....my last year on the horizon. It just seemed that this year went
so fast. [June '03] -- final exams are over, graduation finished (inside
due to the rain), my room all cleaned and I am ready for a summer of fun. Went to Myrtle Beach, SC for a week after school was
out. Beautiful beaches, great food, plenty of time to read and relax.
We spent a few days in Branson, MO...saw a couple of shows, rented a pontoon
boat and cruised a lake, ate too much and just relaxed. From Branson we
stopped in Bull Shoals, AR to visit with family for a couple of days...a very
small town of 2000 that was just a little too slooooow for me. It was nice
to see family and just do nothing but read and watch TV. I think we put
4500 miles on our car in three weeks but now we are home for awhile.
Heritage Fest in DG is this weekend....now there is a party!!!! I went and
had a corn on the cob, some gyros, a lemon shakeup and almost gave in to the
funnel cake....but resisted at the last moment. Ahhhh, summer vacation.
See you all July 5th!!!!
Some Alumni News:
[Editor note: If you don't like what I said about you...email me something better. If I missed an update you sent to me, sorry. Send it again. The NN will be ever changing now that I have it on the web....so check often for updates. My goal will be once every two weeks for updates (the 1st and the 15th of the month).]

Some Party News:
J U L Y 5, 2003 -- We will provide sandwiches and some big containers of lemonade and iced tea. If someone will bring a bat and softball we could go over to Hillcrest and have a game after we eat. Let the fun begin at 4:30 p.m., food at 5:30 p.m. and concluding when you all leave.
This year we will have the ever-popular "Moleburgers" and chicken ala mole. So everyone bring salads, fruit, casseroles, desserts or vegetables. If you have a favorite ethnic dish bring it.
Please come if at all possible. How about a large turnout from the class of '73 (my first class), '78, '83, '88, '93, '98 and '03 for the 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 0 year reunions??? Can you believe it -- 30 years. If you can't come, at least call, email, or write to me beforehand so I can pass along info to other members of your class.
