As a reminder, mark your calendars for the following dates -- July 6, 2002, July 5, 2003, and July 10, 2004 (my retirement year). If you notice it is always the first Saturday after July 4th. So now you know when to come for the next mole of (or at least three) years.
The 2001 party had 47 alumni attendees with the "old timers awards" going to Steve Carnes (again) from the class of 1976. The softball game was much more civil and the old-timers won again....come on "kids"!!! It was a great time and so nice to see all the alumni who took the time to attend. Thanks.
Some Family News:
Rita is teaching 8th grade this year and working hard at learning several new preps and dealing with many of the same kids that she had last year. She has started her retirement countdown...1.00 years to go - JUNE 2003..
Michelle is still living in Ames, IA and has a new full-time permanent job as a city planner in Marshalltown, IA. Her husband, Wayne, has a good job working for a small firm that repairs electric motors and enjoys the challenge of learning a new skill and working with new people. Wayne also does fireworks displays in the midwest...so if you need one just let them know. They have been working on their house this year....new roof, new windows and many changes inside. It is looking very nice.
Mary finished her sophomore year at Ball State University in Indiana. She is an elementary education major with a minor in technology. She is moving out of the dorms for her junior year into an apartment (four bedroom with two baths) with some of her friends. It is such a sweet deal...I wish they had places like this when I was a kid. Check it out at http://www.suhestates.com/ Next fall she will be in a special teaching program working in Indianapolis at an elementary school and the professors will come to the school every day for seminars. It sounds very exciting and the only down side will be she has to drive to Indy every day.
I am teaching two sections of AP Physics and one of AP Chem. Mr. Mortensen is also teaching one section of AP Chem. Still working with the new teacher mentor program (which was just awarded a $250,000 three-year grant and recognized by the state as a model program) and with the technology group training teachers. I attended the National Merit dinner with Tom Klumpner ('01) and it was as usual a wonderful evening. We are looking forward to a summer filled with fun, sun, and sailing. We are time-sharing a 36' Beneteau Sailboat ( http://www.beneteauusa.com/sailboats/boat.cfm?model=beneteau361 ) (a wonderful brand new boat) on Lake Michigan and will be there every minute we can afford. We spent Christmas (read our Christmas letter) break on the road visiting family. Traveled about 2200 miles in six days and celebrated Christmas five different times in 4 different states. It was hectic but fun to see everyone. We spent Christmas day with Michelle in Iowa....was happy to see that Santa actually found us there. Survived the better than average Chicago winter with little to report. Went to Nashville, TN for spring break. We stayed in the Opryland Hotel (it is really something...stay there if you ever get the chance) and went to the Grand Ole Opry (it was fun too). Once again lots of miles in just a few days.
I attended the annual District 99 retirement party....it is always a mix of fun and sadness...seeing my life-long fellow teachers move on to a new phase of their lives. The South retirees for 2002 were: Marjorie Bjornseth, Rudy Boker, Jim Brasen, Dave Harvey, and Ed Richardson. Good luck to them all.
The AP tests were a challenge as always but they are over. Spent the last couple of weeks in physics building and shooting air powered, water powered and solid fuel powered rockets. Didn't kill or hurt anyone and didn't damage any property either. Did get one neighborhood dog a little upset but the medication helped calm him down. In chem they worked on the qual scheme with the usual frustrations....I love watching them do that stuff.
Milestones or should that be Molestones: Attended the 30th graduation ceremony at DGS. My 35th HS reunion is this summer (no, I am not attending)....makes me think that all my classmates are really getting old now. The AP Chem Alumni database of all your names exceeded 700 names with this class (thank goodness you don't all come to the picnic in the same year).
Spent a week in Myrtle Beach, SC right after school was out. The beach, the surf, the sun, the great food and our friends all contributed to a wonderful time. We met 14 of our college friends there and just had a very relaxing vacation. Planning another trip to Florida later in the summer.

Some Party News:
J U L Y 6, 2002 -- We will provide sandwiches and some big containers of lemonade and iced tea. If someone will bring a bat and softball we could go over to Hillcrest and have a game after we eat. The old alum will beat the new. We should have enough doctors in the group to handle the injuries and enough lawyers to handle the lawsuits. Let the fun begin at 4:30 p.m., food at 5:30 p.m. and concluding when you all leave.
This year we will have the ever-popular "Moleburgers", brats and chicken ala mole. So everyone bring salads, fruit, casseroles, desserts or vegetables. If you have a favorite ethnic dish bring it. Last year we had some really interesting and good things. If you can't cook then bring pop, snack stuff or go to Dominicks and buy something good.
Please come if at all possible. How about a large turnout from the class of '77, '82, '87, '92, '97 and '02 for the 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 0 year reunions??? Can you believe it -- 25 years. If you can't come, at least call, email, or write to me beforehand so I can pass along info to other members of your class.
