As a reminder, mark your calendars for the following dates -- July 7, 2001, July 6, 2002, July 5, 2003, and July 10, 2004 (my retirement year). If you notice it is always the first Saturday after July 4th. So now you know when to come for the next mole (or at least four) of years.

The 2000 party had over 50 alumni attendees with the "old timers awards" going to Steve Carnes, from the class of 1976.  The softball game was very exciting but a little physical this year.  Next year...no sliding, no running into each other, no throwing the ball hard, no bad language, and the old timers have to win again.  It was a real treat to have the party at all in 2000 due to the house fire.  Several of you encouraged me to do it and some even offered their homes as an alternate site...thanks so much for being there with us during a difficult time.  (see NN 2000 for more fire details)

Some Family News:

We are back HOME as of June 30, 2000.  It feels GOOD.  Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, kind comments, and offers of help.  They were all appreciated very much.

Rita teaching 8th grade this year and working hard at learning several new preps and dealing with many of the same kids that she had last year.  She has started her retirement countdown...2.0 years to go.

Michelle is still living in Ames, IA and has a new full-time permanent job as a city planner in Marshalltown, IA.  She was involved in a car accident (not hurt) in February and got a new car out of that.  Her husband, Wayne, has a new job working for a small firm that repairs electric motors and enjoys the challenge of learning a new skill and working with new people.  Wayne also does fireworks displays in the midwest...so if you need one just let them know.

Mary started college at Ball State University in Muncie, IN in the fall of 2000.  She is an elementary education major with a minor in communications.  The first semester was a time to adjust to being away from home, living with a roommate, getting to know the Greek alphabet, and working harder than she had done at DGS.  Her first semester grades were very good and she will be going back after break.  She is really enjoying the time and the people.  Mary decided to spend her spring break with her roommate on a 7-day cruise to the Caribbean instead of in DG with her parents...go figure...kids these days.  It is her first cruise so we hope she enjoys it.  The good thing is that the boat has a live webcam that updates every 60 sec so we can watch her 24/7.  It really is pretty neat...we watched her set sail in San Juan from my computer at home.  We yelled Bon Voyage and then drank champagne to celebrate the fact that she wasn't coming home for break!!! (just kidding).  We did go to the airport to wish her a safe trip.  She finished her first year successfully and even liked it so much that she stayed for the summer session.  She will be home for about 4 weeks in August.

I am teaching two sections of AP Chem and one of AP Physics.  Still working with the new teacher mentor program and with the technology group training teachers.  It has been a hectic summer and fall dealing with the insurance companies and the fire stuff.  That will over soon and life will return to a more normal routine.  I attended the National Merit dinner with Jon Ang (00) and it was as usual a wonderful evening.  Alex Picel (00), Jon Ang (00), Jameel Shihadeh (01), and Pierre Miller (01) were among the honored guests that are chem alum.  We are looking forward to a summer filled with fun, sun, and sailing.  We are time-sharing a 36' Beneteau Sailboat ( http://www.beneteauusa.com/sailboats/boat.cfm?model=beneteau361 ) (a wonderful brand new boat) on Lake Michigan and will be there every minute we can afford. See link at www.fairwindsail.com .  It has been a struggle getting our house back to normal after the fire but the one year mark is approaching (3/6) and we will be done with the insurance company and all of that paperwork stuff.  

My wife and I went to LA for spring break...almost didn't come back.  Very beautiful in southern California.  While there  I got to have dinner with four old alumni...Paul Pomes (75), Bob Hayden (79), Roger Lo (82), and Xei Xiong (92).  We had a great meal at a restaurant on the coast overlooking the ocean.  Talked for several hours and shared stories about DGS, chemistry, U of I, and work.  I had a evening to remember...thanks guys for taking time out to spend with me and my wife.

On April 27 the district had a wonderful retirement dinner for 31 staff members retiring in June 2001.  They represented over 800 years of service to the district.  The teachers from South that I know many of you had were: Sandra Brennan, David Clause, Alice Desai, Bruce Johnson, Kevin Keogh, Fred Kirsch, Ray Knippenberg, William Kolek, Joan Krause, Mary Ann Lindahl, Janice Lingafelter, Sam Moscato, Rich Muegge, Henry Peper, Dick Rempert, Sharon Rushbrook, George Toman, and Roy Wiemerslage.  They will all be missed by those of us STILL WORKING.

Well, now school is out...I am on vacation...and I have to finish this newsletter and get it in the mail or email.  Hope to see you all on July 7th.

The other deals with engineering a membrane compatible metal working fluid formulation used in industrial metal shaping so manufacturers won't have to pay (pollute) so much to get rid of it. Some Party News:

J U L Y 7, 2001 -- We will provide sandwiches and some big containers of lemonade and iced tea. If someone will bring a bat and softball we could go over to Hillcrest and have a game after we eat. The old alum will beat the new. We should have enough doctors in the group to handle the injuries and enough lawyers to handle the lawsuits.  Let the fun begin at 4:30 p.m., food at 5:30 p.m. and concluding when you all leave.

This year we will have the ever-popular "Moleburgers", brats and chicken ala mole. So everyone bring salads, fruit, casseroles, desserts or vegetables. If you have a favorite ethnic dish bring it. Last year we had some really interesting and good things. If you can't cook then bring pop, snack stuff or go to Dominicks and buy something good.

Please come if at all possible. How about a large turnout from the class of '76, '81, '86, '91, '96 and '01 for the 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 0 year reunions??? Can you believe it -- 25 years. If you can't come, at least call, email, or write to me beforehand so I can pass along info to other members of your class.
